Mysterious, elusive, spine-tingling, and inspiring of endless stories: the worlds of whisky and paranormal have not a little in common. Join renowned whisky writer and raconteur Charles MacLean, and Lance Butler, chair of the Arthur Conan Doyle Centre, for a meeting of spirits, as they reflect on their experiences of things supernatural over a dram or two. Charles will also talk the audience through the whisky, which is provided. Over-18s only. Please drink sensibly. 

About the authors:

Lance Butler taught literature, literary theory and stylistics at the Universities of Stirling in the UK, and Pau in France before retiring to Edinburgh. He is the author of books on Samuel Beckett and Philosophy, on Thomas Hardy, and on the Victorian Loss of Faith. Since discovering the Scientific and Medical Network in the 1980s he has been researching the question of ‘life after death’ and what is known about the possibility of the Survival of Consciousness beyond our final moments.

Scotland's leading whisky writer Charles MacLean was founding editor of Whisky Magazine. He has published 18 books to date, including the standard work on whisky brands, Scotch Whisky and the leading book on its subject, Malt Whisky, both of which were shortlisted for Glenfiddich Awards. He was granted the rare honour of being elected Master of the Quaich, the industry’s highest accolade, in October 2009. In 2021, he received an MBE for services to Scotch whisky, UK exports and charity.
