In his latest full collection of poems, Tom Pow’s work is imprinted with landscapes, relationships and memories. They show how encounters with paintings, with reading and with history, through imaginative sympathy, can be transformed into personal lived experiences. The publication of Naranjas, marking Pow’s seventieth year, shows him still writing poems “alive to the sounds, smells, noises and ironies of life,” as Jim Burns commented on a previous collection. There is an urgency underlying the poems in this present work, as they seek to understand better how people live “in the green bone-yards of our world.”

About the author: Tom Pow was born in Edinburgh and studied Medieval History at the University of St Andrews, then taught for a number of years in Edinburgh, London and Madrid before settling in Dumfries, where he became an English teacher at Dumfries Academy. He went on to become Head of Creative and Cultural Studies at the University of Glasgow’s Crichton Campus, Dumfries, and was Honorary Senior Research Fellow there. He lectures at Lancaster University on its Distance Learning MA in Creative Writing.
