Big DoG 2024

Join the Big DoG Book Festival team in our mission to help children fall in love with reading.

Why Big DoG

According to research from the department of education, reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

According to another report from the UK Social Mobility Commission, one in four primary pupils in Dumfries and Galloway are below the national average of expected reading and writing levels. We hope to help fill this gap by sharing the power of story and inspiring the next generation of readers.

Volunteer

Our events would not be possible without our volunteers. They carry out roles like:

- Driving guests to and from airports and stations. We pay travel expenses for all volunteer journeys.
- Venue hosting; selling tickets and books at events and making sure everything runs smoothly.
- Stewarding; welcoming audiences, scanning tickets.
- Programme distribution around Dumfries.

Our Big DoG volunteers are entitled to free entry for themselves, and their children or grandchildren, plus a £25 annual voucher for Wigtown Book Festival.

Become an Ambassador

Big DoG Book Festival brings award-winning authors and illustrators to Dumfries each spring. We're looking for ambassadors in schools, libraries and local businesses to help build the Big DoG community.

We'll send programme and promotional material to help you spread the word about our accessible events and we'll welcome you to the team with an all-access family pass.
