Reel People Reel Places

Do you have a favourite spot in Dumfries and Galloway?

Would you care to share it with the world?

Reel People Reel Places is a new initiative taking place in the lead up to the Wigtown Book Festival (25 September – 4 October 2026). With support from Best of British funding we aim to this year showcase the beautiful views, stunning landscape, historical landmarks and unique businesses around us through the eyes of our local people.

We are asking for volunteer help on this one if possible! What we would like you to do is select your favourite spot in the whole of Dumfries and Galloway and tell us about it through a short video. The videos will then be used as reels on our socials channels and also on wigtownbookfestival.com

You might want to describe the historical significance of a landmark, tell us about where you most enjoy a coffee, uncover a lesser known hidden gem, walk through a picturesque street or simply just wow! at a view.

Star in your own video, or get creative with friends

We would love it if you appeared in the video but if you prefer you can add a voiceover (or send us your accompanying words and we will add a voiceover or text description for you).

You can make the video alone or as a group if you share this spot with friends. Aim to capture the audience attention in the first few seconds if you can!

It is entirely up to you how creative you would like to be but ideally keep these rules in mind:

  • Record the video by holding your phone screen in portrait mode
  • Keep the video length between 10 seconds and 90 seconds
  • You don’t need to record in one go, you can record sections in clips
  • Don’t add any music that may be subject to copyright

How to submit your content

If you are already a brilliant reel maker you might want to share the reel on your own socials and either tag us or invite us as a collaborator. If you would prefer you can also send us the video footage and we will do the rest - send to [email protected] or if the file(s) are too large you can send for free to this same email address using wetransfer.com

Finally if video is not your thing we can also accept written descriptions of no more than 50 words with up to 5 images that we can turn into a reel.

This is a new experiment for us this year with an aim of showcasing the best places around us to potential festival attenders and international followers. Reels will appear on socials from June 2026 onwards and will also be available to view on the website. Any questions please contact Jacqueline at [email protected]
