Are you aged 11-25? Join us to achieve your Bronze Arts Award

Saturday 10 - Sunday 11 February 2018

10.30am-4pm daily

Taking place in The Print Room, 11 North Main Street, Wigown

What is Arts Award?
Arts Award develops your creativity, communication and leadership skills and is a nationally recognised qualification administered by Trinity College.

As a registered Arts Award Centre, Wigtown Festival Company is set to host its first Arts Award Weekend on Saturday 10 - Sunday 11 February with artist and illustrator Astrid Jaekel.  It's open to young people aged 11-25 years and is absolutely free.

What will the weekend involve?
Have you ever wondered how a seamlessly repeating pattern is made, for example that of your favourite cushion or on your granny's flowery wallpaper? In this weekend workshop you will be shown how to design and create your own. Bring an object with an interesting silhouette shape. For example this could be any object found in your house such as a teapot or an artefact from nature with an interesting natural pattern.

Over the weekend we will explore:

  • how artists and designers make patterns and how they are applied to various things
  • how to use a sketchbook to draw from observation and develop ideas for your own repeating design
  • how to carve your design into an A5 lino block and print it repeatedly over and A3 sized surface
  • sharing your learning with someone else

Young people will complete all four sections of their Bronze Award and make a start to their individual portfolio.  The four elements of the award are:

  • Take part - develop your skills in the arts
  • Be the audience for the arts and respond to your experience
  • Arts inspiration - research someone in the arts
  • Arts skills share - pass your arts skills on to others

Booking is essential and can be done by contacting the Office at Number 11 North Main Street, Wigtown, DG8 9HN, over the phone at 01988403222 or by emailing  The weekend is free, including all materials, lunch and snacks.
