Welcome to Wigtown Book Festival

Wigtown is a historic market town on the Galloway coast that is home to 900 people, a malt whisky distillery and a quarter of a million books. Each year our autumn book festival provides ten days of readings, performances, exhibitions and debates, which prompts a mass migration of bibliophiles from all over Britain to this pastoral corner of Scotland.

Unlike some other festivals, literary events are immune to inclement weather. All our venues are warm and dry, and offer the ideal refuge from an autumnal shower.

And rest assured that, between events, there will be plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere in Scotland’s widest street or browse around our cavernous bookshops.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Launch Party

The Wigtown Book Festival is proud to announce that we’re launching Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in the Machars.

If your child is aged between 0 and 5 and lives in the Machars peninsula, south of the A75, including Newton Stewart and Minigaff, he or she is eligible to receive a free, age-appropriate book through the post every month!

Our launch party will take place at 2pm in the County Buildings, Wigtown on Sunday 4th May and will include a performance by “The Gruffalo” author Julia Donaldson as well as other entertainment, refreshments and the opportunity to register your child. Children can also come dressed as their favourite character from a book.
